Preparation starts Monday for I-94 expansion in Kalamazoo

- This $5.4 million project will set the stage for I-94 expansion construction in 2021 and 2022.

 

May 12, 2020 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin construction on Monday, May 18, to prepare a 2.8-mile section of I-94 between Lovers Lane and Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo to be widened from two lanes to three lanes in each direction.

The $5.4 million investment will include temporary shoulder widening and repairs, crossover lane construction, and bridge improvements over the Grand Elk Railroad and the Canadian National Railroad.

This year's work is expected to be completed by Nov. 14 with single-lane closures and traffic shifts during construction.

MDOT will be reconstructing and widening I-94 from four lanes to six lanes from Lovers Lane to Sprinkle Road in 2021 and 2022. That two-year project includes replacing the Portage Road interchange and realigning Kilgore Road.
